I think you need both. I believe you should split up the amount of information you keep on them. I think you should have just the basics you need on your notebook and all your personal and private information on your desktop as well as any backups you might need in case you're notebook just so happens to get lost. Don't keep any critical or personal information on your notebook.

I dont know about the people here, but I myself like them both. In my household we have 4 laptops and one desk top, they all seem to get the work done. However, the notebooks are certainly convenient when traveling and I guess that would be the major difference.
